The Rio Nature Secrets is...
... is a full day spent discovering how many different worlds fit inside one city — rainforest, mountains, wetlands and wild coastline, all within the city limits of Rio de Janeiro.
ONE CITY. 4 ECOSYSTEMS
Most visitors spend their days in Rio moving between beaches and landmarks. This tour takes a different route. Few people realize that Rio de Janeiro contains one of the most diverse urban ecosystems on the planet. By the end of the day, you'll have seen it with your own eyes.
INTO THE FOREST
The day begins at Penhasco Dois Irmãos Park — a quiet Atlantic Forest reserve tucked into the hills above Leblon, largely unknown even to locals. On clear days, the wooden viewpoints reveal the arc of Ipanema and Leblon beaches below, framed by Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and Christ the Redeemer.
From there, the tour moves into Tijuca National Park, where 3 stops bring the forest to life: the Taunay Waterfall, a cascade hidden deep in the vegetation; and the Vista Chinesa belvedere, a hilltop terrace with wide views over the city on clear days and Mirante Canoas, with a view to the magificent Pedra da Gávea, highest monolith close to the ocean in the world. Along the way, your guide will share the remarkable story of how this entire forest was replanted in the 19th century — one of the earliest reforestation efforts in history.
Keep an eye out: coatis, monkeys, toucans and sloths all live in this forest, and a sighting is always possible.
LUNCH BREAK
Mid-day pause at a local restaurant. A chance to rest and eat well before the afternoon. Lunch is not included in the tour price.
THE MANGROVE
The afternoon heads west to the lagoons of Rio where a gentle walk along the edge of mangrove reveals a quieter, slower side of the city. This is mangrove territory — a protected ecosystem where caimans and capybaras can be possibly seen near the water's edge, an encounter that surprises most visitors.
THE SECLUDED BEACHES
Next comes Prainha — a small, half-moon cove ringed by Atlantic Forest and protected. Rio's most beloved surf beach, fiercely defended by local surfers in the 1990s who fought to keep it free from construction. Kick off your shoes, walk the sand, cool off in the water if you like, or simply sit with a fresh coconut water.
The day closes at Mirante do Roncador, where Rio's mountain range reveals — from just the right angle — the outline of the Sleeping Giant: a silhouette woven into the hills and into local legend. A quiet end to a full day.
MORE THAN JUST A TOUR.. LEARN AND BE AMAZED
Our experienced and passionate tour guides are ready to give you tons of information to enrich your experience and the whole trip. From geography and history to botany and beyond, open your mind and allow yourself to fall in love with the essence of Brazil and the natural wonders that surround you.
SMALL GROUPS, GREAT EXPERIENCES.
To ensure every participant receives our guides' full attention — and to maximize the chances of wildlife sightings — we keep our groups small, with a maximum of 6 people* on the regular daily tours. Our tours book up regularly, so we recommend reserving your spot in advance.
*Bigger groups
If you have a bigger group we can organize an exclusive tour separated from the regular daily activities. Please contact us by email [email protected].
(on each of one of the parks, there will a bit of walking – but NOT hiking on trails – to get to know and experience the lush of a variety of ecosystems and maybe see some wildlife)
